Neos Kosmos: Urban regeneration of a social housing complex
Project Type
Diploma Thesis
Completion Date
September 2025
Location
Neos Kosmos, Athens
This project concerns the redevelopment of the Agios Sostis workers' housing complex in Neos Kosmos, Athens. The complex was completed in 1964, and since then the buildings have undergone several changes by the tenants, both internally and externally, as well as considerable damage, which has altered their original form. Furthermore, although there are large green spaces with trees and plants between the buildings, they have been left without proper use and have simply turned into passageways or even parking spaces.
Consequently, the proposal aimed at a total urban renovation of both the buildings internally and externally, as well as the outdoor spaces. The main architectural intention was to create a new, more cohesive community-neighborhood that promotes interaction between residents and provides various activities, proposing a new, more sustainable and social way of living. My intention was implemented architecturally through the creation of communal meeting and activity spaces both in the buildings and in the outdoor areas, co-living and co-working spaces, as well as optimizing the apartments and creating gateways(pilotis) for parking spaces.
The main design concept I followed was to develop several different apartment typologies and intervention methods, based on each building block separately. This was done in order to achieve greater complexity and a variety of housing and communal space options, that aim at housing different social groups.
